Americans are sitting too much and for too long and it is ruining their health. Not even a daily trip to the gym can undo its damage. Obesity expert Dr. James Levine said, “Sitting all day long is literally killing us. A few years ago, I would have said to you, ‘You know, the person who’s doing that session at the gym once a day is doing everything they need to do.’ But the data that are now coming up suggests that’s not the case. Being sedentary for nine hours a day at the office is bad for your health whether you go home andwatch television afterwards or hit the gym. It is bad whether you are morbidly obese or marathon-runner thin. It appears that what is critical and maybe even more important than going to the gym, is breaking up that sitting time.” Sitting for too long causes the muscles to stop moving all together and the heart to slow; the body’s calorie-burning rate then plummets to about one calorie per minute — a third of what it would be if you were walking. As a result, insulin effectiveness drops and the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes rises. Fat and cholesterol levels rise too. He advises, if there’s no treadmill desk in your future, get up for 10 minutes every hour. (NBC News)
