OAS TO HELP JAMAICA WITH CYBER SECURITY—03/22/14
The Organization of American States (OAS) will help Jamaica develop a national cyber security strategy. The organization reported that its Inter-American Committee against Terrorism decided on a three-day visit to Kingston that it would offer technical aid to the government. The committee’s Cyber Security Program will collaborate with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining in Jamaica and provide expert advice on methods suitable for adoption in a national strategy.
TSUNAMI WARNING SYSTEM TESTED IN CARIBBEAN BASIN—03/26/14
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC) performed a test of its tsunami alert system, which covers 31 countries located in the Caribbean basin. The test involved a tsunami that occurred 267 miles west of the coast of Gibraltar and simulated the earthquake and tidal wave that occurred on November 1, 1755 in the area. The temblor in 1755 impacted the coastlines of Portugal, Spain, North Africa and islands in the Caribbean.
